TOKYO, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher on Wednesday as Wall Street's overnight gains on solid U.S. companies' earnings saw investor sentiment bolstered here.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 291.88 points, or 1.29 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 22,841.12.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 25.96 points, or 1.54 percent, to finish at 1,713.87.

Securities, precision instrument, and consumer credit-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
