The highway has been closed for over six years when the rebels were in control over nearby areas of Eastern Ghouta countryside. Following the rebels' evacuation of Eastern Ghouta earlier this month, the government started the reconstruction work to prepare the road to be back in service after the civilians used another route out of Damascus in the past years.
