MANILA, May 3 (Xinhua) -- More than 700 fisherfolk from coastal communities in northern Philippines have been affected by a government-imposed "no-sail" policy during the ongoing Balikatan military exercises, according to the Department of National Defense (DND).

The no-sail zone, which restricts fishing activities due to increased movement of military air, land, and maritime assets, will remain in effect until May 6 as a safety precaution.

On Saturday, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro led the distribution of family food packs and financial assistance to 734 residents in three coastal areas in Ilocos Norte province.

During a dialogue with the fisherfolk, Teodoro underscored that large-scale joint exercises conducted by the Armed Forces of the Philippines with partner nations "serve as a continuing learning process, including better understanding the needs of affected communities."

Teodoro emphasized that joint military training with allies strengthens the country's deterrence capabilities, upholds its exclusive economic zone, and protects the long-term livelihoods of coastal communities. ■
