DAR ES SALAAM, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Directorate of Presidential Communications said on Wednesday that the East African country is set to carry out comprehensive tax reforms.
According to a statement issued by the directorate, the move signals a shift toward building a modern, service-oriented tax system aligned with the country's evolving economic needs.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan said that a commission was established to conduct a thorough review of the tax system following longstanding concerns raised by citizens, businesses, investors and development partners.
She said that nearly 35 years have passed since the last major review, highlighting the urgency of modernizing the system to reflect current economic realities.
She said the plan envisions contributions of 22 percent from public revenue, 70 percent from the private sector, and 8 percent from public institutions, stressing the need to empower private sector growth. ■
